Bears claw out 79-64 win over Saints

Box Score WINTER PARK – Shaw University closed the game on a 15-4 run to pull away and defeat Flagler College 79-64 in the second game of the 38th annual Winter Park Rotary Tangerine Tournament Saturday afternoon at Warden Arena.

Shaw snapped its two-game losing streak and improved to 5-4 overall. They will take on Rollins College in the championship game tomorrow at 2 p.m. Flagler suffered its third consecutive set-back and fell to 4-4 on the season and will face Mansfield University in the consolation game at noon tomorrow. Rollins defeated Mansfield 71-61 in the first game of the day.

Curtis Hines scored a game-high 25 points on 10-of-14 shooting from the field. Latrail McCoy added 22 points, seven rebounds and six assists for the Bears. He sank four 3-pointers, including three in the first nine minutes of the game. Karron Johnson chipped in with 18 points, 13 of which came in the first half.

Ante Gospic led Flagler with 20 points and 11 rebounds, his first double-double of the season. Matt Conway added 10 points while Matt Clark came off of the bench to add eight points. Jordan Warner collected eight rebounds.

Shaw closed the first half on a 20-5 run. Matthias Sigurdarson sank a 3-pointer for Flagler with 6:11 left to give the Saints a 32-29 lead. Dortch missed a chance to tie the game on a 3-pointer the next time down the court for the Bears, but he missed, but the Saints turned the ball over and Dortch connected on his next 3-point attempt to tie the game with 5:38 left which sparked the run.

The Bears took a 49-37 lead into the half. Flagler only turned the ball over six times, but Shaw took advantage and scored 14 points off those miscues.

Flagler trailed by as many as 15 in the second half, but managed to cut into the deficit. Conway and Clark bookended a 20-9 run with 3-pointers. Clark's came at 9:10 and the Saints closed to within four, 62-58. Flagler could not get any closer.

Flagler drops to 3-4 all-time in the Winter Park Rotary Tangerine Tournament. Shaw won its first game after going 0-2 in 2009.
